Replacing your kitchen backsplash can be an easy and affordable way to give your kitchen a facelift!
You may be thinking...why do this myself? The average backsplash could cost up to $1,350. When you're already remodeling a kitchen, this is a hefty cost to add. Typically, this cost factors in a minimum of $160 for labor and $10 per square foot of material.
Of course, this cost is also dependent on the material of the backsplash.
Ceramic tiles: you're looking at $25 per square foot, making a 30 sq. ft kitchen roughly $812.
Stone tiles: $30 per square foot at 30 sq ft is $870
Glass Tiles: $32 per square foot at 30 sq ft is $849
Stainless Steel: $36 per square foot at 30 sq ft is $1,025
Don't forget to factor in complexity of the tile laying, existing backsplash removal, additional cuts to the material, electrical outlets, transportation costs and contractor rate adjustments--these can all add up!
Why not tackle this project on your own?
Avoid these mistakes during installation and you'll have a pro-looking backsplash in no time!
Weekend project? Here you come.
Tip 1: Don't forget to prep the surface!
You need a smooth, clean surface. No debris, stains, wallpaper or uneven surfaces otherwise the backsplash won't stick!
Tip 2: Measure, re-measure, think about it, then cut!
You'll save on tiles (and your sanity later on) when you're 100% sure that your tiles are cut right!
Tip 3: Buy extra tile - you'll need it!
Accidents happen and that means broken and cracked tiles. Keep an extra 10% of tiles on hand just in case!
Tip 4: Use your countertop as a guide!
Your countertop serves as a guide to make sure the tile is even. It also bears some weight while the adhesive cures. For places with no counter guide (like behind the stove), use a wooden plank as a level!
Tip 5: Patience is key when grouting.
Make sure the grout is neat and precise. No clumps!
Tip 6: Battens and levels are your friends!
They make sure that the your backsplash looks neat, tidy and straight. With these tools, you won't have to redo anything!
Tip 7: Don't drill on the edge tiles!
Drilling on edge tiles = cracking that will only get bigger over time. Make sure to plan your shelving ahead of time and keep those drills far away from the edges!
Tip 8: Don't forget your outlets!
Grab some outlet spacers to make sure your outlets will be leveled with the rest of the backsplash. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be perfect as the outlet cover will smooth out the imperfections later!
